I thought it would be interesting to start commenting in the Newsletter regarding topics related to the design of your yacht. I’ll keep these fairly non-technical so our diverse readership can all benefit. All Island Packet owners will be subject to a pop quiz at any time, so get out your yellow highlighters!

Safety first, luxury a following second. It was the only way that I could be sure that we would really “Sail away”. First, I had to be able to reassure all the important people that I cared about that I had chosen a boat that was as safe as could be hoped for and second, I had to provide enough creature comforts to ensure that Lynda stayed on the boat with me.

Okay, please allow myself to introduce myself. The name’s Nathan Sasson and traveling’s the game. Yes I’ve been travelling for a while now and have seen some sights, but on this particular occasion I’d like to share with you the perspective of an Aussie on the high seas between Great Britain…which really is great by the way, and the food and wine friendly landmass of France, which I’m sure is great if I got to stay a little longer.

The Island Packets Owner's Association (UK) annual Channel Cruise and Rally commenced with supper at Chichester YC on Thursday June 3rd and a briefing from cruise leader Past Commodore Andy Brooking. Tidal constraints meant an early start and either anchoring at East Head or to keep going, so dawn saw a gathering of 6 yachts off the Nab at 04.00 hrs 4th June. Due to the high pressure we motored sailed the whole way to Le Havre, which eminently suited certain ladies on their first XChannel! After a pleasant supper ashore in Le Havre, the following morning saw the fleet in line astern, bar one, making for Honfleur. Stemming the tide whilst waiting for the lock to open recorded 4.8 knots. There were some fun and games as the yachts positioned themselves within the lock much to the amusement of Pipe Dream, which held back but then she too joined the fun a tad too fast but no serious damage was done! Mustn’t Grumble went directly to Honfleur on the 3rd and we all met briefly before they left to go to Caen for the D-Day celebrations around Pegasus Bridge. The remaining five Island Packet Yachts rafted up in Le Vieux Basin and created a great deal of interest with their distinctive lines.

Many of the boats in the Honfleur rally then went on to our annual rendevous which this year was held in Cowes from Thursday 10th until Saturday 12th 2004. Boats began arriving from midday on the 10th where moorings had been organised in Cowes Yacht Haven in the heart of Cowes. In all a total of seven boats took part - we were due two or three more but circumstances prevented their owners coming at the last minute.

Like most boat owners I thought servicing a winch would be hard to do. I imagined that when you took a winch apart it would be full of springs and sprockets designed to explode into a myriad of confusing pieces which would never all fit back together. However it’s not like that at all, Roland from Lewmar came along and showed us how easy it was by servicing winches on several boats.

As we were leaving Honfleur we tied up next to the harbour wall as we waited for the outer lock. The only free spot was next to a big ketch “English Rose VI”, which looked as if it had seen some miles. A lovely man called John and his wife Marie Christine popped out and told us this was their first European landfall and that he, his wife and crew were on the way back from a 30,000 mile round the world voyage, his third!
